Shears

What Are Shears & How Are They Used for Hair Cuting?

Shears are a specialized set of scissors used specifically for cutting and styling hair. They have long, thin blades that curve slightly to provide greater control and accuracy when cutting hair. Professional hairdressers use shears to create styles on the customers’ hair, such as adding texture or layers, giving a razor cut, or precision-cutting a style.

Shears come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from standard straight-blades to curved blades, offset handles and more. There are also various types of shears available, all designed with specific uses in mind. For example, thinning shears have notched blades that create very thin, wispy strands of hair, while texturizing shears are designed to create choppy layers. Depending on the intended purpose, hairdressers may choose one type of shear or combine different kinds to achieve the desired effect.

To use the shears, the hairdresser will hold them in an open position and place the blade tip at the desired length. The hairdresser will then hold the customer’s hair between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, guide it through the blade and snip off the desired amount. This process is repeated until the entire style is complete.

When cutting hair with shears, it is important to be aware of the hair’s texture, density, and condition. Hair that is very dry, brittle, or of a finer texture will require a gentler approach to avoid the hair splitting or becoming damaged. Curly hair is best cut wet and can be difficult to manage with shears due to its unevenness. Porous hair, which breaks easily, should be handled with extra care.

It is also important to use the right technique when using shears. Hairdressers should begin at the bottom of the hair and work their way up, using slow, steady movements that create clean, even cuts. Shears should not be used to chop off the hair; instead, they should be used to gradually trim the ends. Haircutters should never apply pressure to the blades while cutting, as this can cause damage to the shears or the customer’s hair.

Using shears correctly can give a great result and help customers to achieve the hairstyle they desire. With the right tools, knowledge, and practice, any hairdresser can master the art of hair cutting with shears.
